A Diffraction of Photographers

The Teatro Tomas Terry, Cienfuegos
Camera: Canon EOS 7D | Lens: EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM | Date: 19-11-2010 22:43 | ISO: 200 | Exp. bias: 0 EV | Exp. Time: 1/100s | Aperture: 8.0 | Focal Length: 16.0mm (~25.9mm) | Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

I’ve found the right collective noun for photographers: it has to be a “diffraction”, because they do have a tendency to spread out from a point. Like setting a group of small dogs loose in a wood full of squirrels…

The drive down from Vinales to Cienfuegos was long, boring and bumpy, not helped by a driver with the bladder of a camel. What is remarkable is how empty central Cuba is: only a very small fraction of the land visible from the motorway is under cultivation. This is in sharp contrast to every other Caribbean island I’ve visited, where almost every available square foot has some productive use, even if it’s only a couple of goats or banana plants. I expected to see mile after mile under sugar cane or similar, but instead you see a lot of scrubland.

Then, suddenly, about 20 miles from the south coast, things change. There’s rich and varied agriculture, and the architecture changes to what I think of as “generic Caribbean”: small square houses with flat or shallow pitched roofs.

Finally, Cienfuegos is different again: there are sprawling suburbs with the 60s blocks beloved of Communist countries, but the town centre and sea-front have a certain elegance, and are at least a little reminiscent of other Victorian sea-side resort towns, albeit without the big seafront hotels and casinos. It may still be poor, but it’s a definite notch up from Havana or Vinales.

Friday’s picture is of the Theatre in the central square. It’s not a misprint, but a very odd coincidence: Tomas Terry was a dodgy posh bloke who built a theatre, and of course Terry Thomas was an actor who played dodgy posh blokes.

Valley View

Panorama of Vinales Valley, shot from a hotel veranda at the Hotel Los Jazzmines
Resolution: 5605 x 843

Another shot from yesterday: the view from my hotel balcony at the Hotel Los Jazzmines, a panorama stitched from 5 shots.

Scary fact: the TIF file generated by the stitching software was 148MB. That’s the downside of steadily growing image resolution 🙁 On the other hand, I’m still workingtowards my first gigapixel panorama 🙂

Mixed Fortunes

Mother and child, tobacco farm, Vinales
Camera: Canon EOS 7D | Lens: EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM | Date: 18-11-2010 15:48 | Resolution: 4854 x 3236 | ISO: 800 | Exp. bias: -1 EV | Exp. Time: 1/50s | Aperture: 4.5 | Focal Length: 35.0mm (~56.7mm) | Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

The update I wrote at about 7am yesterday turned out to be incorrect – the mist in Vinales Valley suddenly cleared, and we got some very good shots in the early morning light, with wisps of mist still visible. I’ll pop one of these in the second post.

After breakfast we visited a tobacco farm. Unfortunately there wasn’t much to see in terms of tobacco processing, because it’s right at the end of the season. However, we did get plenty of chances to shoot the people and the farm itself. I’m particularly proud of my “mother and child” shot. Who says my subscription to National Geographic isn’t paying off? 🙂

The people are very friendly, and will put up with endless requests to pose with a smile on their faces. However you do worry that it’s driven by their desperate poverty, and the fact that a 1 Peso tip is getting on for a day’s income for some people here. I can’t imagine telling a Surry farmer to stop what he’s doing for 1/2 hour so 14 people can take photographs, or (as happened to another person on the trip yesterday, admittedly inadvertently) stopping someone driving off in their own car because they were getting in shot!

Yesterday afternoon the weather closed in, so my exhaustive series on the porches of Vinales will have to wait until another year…

7 hour drive to Cienfuegos today. Oh well…

Cool Cab

Cool cab, Cuba!
Camera: Canon EOS 7D | Lens: EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM | Date: 17-11-2010 23:43 | ISO: 1600 | Exp. bias: -1/3 EV | Exp. Time: 1/6s | Aperture: 10.0 | Focal Length: 15.0mm (~24.3mm) | Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

This doesn’t need much explanation. Forgive the slight camera shake, but a 1950s Ford Consul does vibrate a bit. Who cares!

Bolting Horse Cart

Bolting horse buggy, Vinales, Cuba
Camera: Canon EOS 7D | Lens: EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM | Date: 17-11-2010 22:06 | ISO: 200 | Exp. bias: 0 EV | Exp. Time: 1/50s | Aperture: 8.0 | Focal Length: 53.0mm (~85.9mm) | Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

I wanted to use the shot of the old guy with the cigar to illustrate my main post, but this was arguably yesterday’s shot of the day. The buggy had just become trapped on the edge of a building while trying to turn round, and the horse was getting a bit nervous. A passerby freed the buggy, and it shot off like a greyhound out of a trap. Fortunately for once I was quick on the button, and my Canon honoured its sporting roots!

Lots of News

Quite a lot of news…

Migration of our web sites and email to the new hosting server is almost complete. See previous article/rant for some of my findings. After some initial frustration with my hosting provider (WebFusion) when I discovered the
limitations of their new Linux shared hosting services compared with the old one, I have to say a big “Thank You” for their efficiency in finding a better solution for me, and providing me with effective technical support to get it up and running.

If you do have any problems with our sites or email, let me know…

I’m currently developing a new blog, based on WordPress. This will make it easier to post “on the fly” than with the current solution, hand-carved from XML and ASP (now PHP).

When the new blog is running, I’m going to have a regular post for fans of my photography, so you can see what I’ve been working on. In the meantime, I’ve updated my gallery pages so they are a bit easier to navigate, bookmark and search.

And talking about my photography, I’ve recently been accepted by the Alamy stock agency. So please all rush at once and spend lots of money licensing my pictures for all those uses you’ve dreamed of but were too polite to mention 🙂

See you soon,

Andrew

Legislative Stupidity

I feel compelled to write this post to highlight a stupid law which rather than constraining terrorists hands them victory.

In July 2008 my wife and I attended the Northampton Balloon Festival. An enjoyable time was had by all, notwithstanding a complete absence of balloons, occasioned by the British weather.

One of the highlights was a successful attempt on the world record for the greatest number of performers singing “Y.M.C.A”! This shot captures the scene:

OK, it’s not “Afghan Girl” or “Migrant Mother”, but I liked it, capturing a British Bobby policing his community exactly as required.

This photograph is legal. Had I taken it after February 16th 2009 I would have committed a crime. The stupidity of that law hands victory to the terrorists.

My Photo Gallery is Now Live

I’ve always had a strong interest in photography, both as a practical tool to record our experiences in life, and as an art form. Fans of the Coppertrees Calendar will know how I’ve had great fun capturing friends, family and travel over the years.

I’ve also always had great admiration for those photographers whose work can really move the emotions, particularly the great landscape photographers like Ansel Adams. Taking good representational photographs is hard enough, but establishing a composition which can both emotionally inspire the viewer and satisfy the critics is even harder.

Over the last year or so I’ve been rediscovering photography with a Digital SLR, and on my new photography pages you’ll find some of my efforts, plus (in coming weeks) some hints, tips and tools for the D-SLR photographer.

Happy New Year!

Apologies to regular readers who wondered if I’d fallen off the planet. It’s been a busy second half of 2005, and I haven’t managed to do much reading or writing for a few months. However, with the builders gone and a very difficult year over, hopefully things will get back to more nearly normal!

Sorry, there’s no Coppertrees Calendar for 2006 – another casualty of our very busy 2005. Hopefully it will make a return in 2007.I’m currently working on a new paper, looking at the different ways of modelling dependencies in software. I’m hoping it’s possible to merge some of the matrix-based techniques with pattern-based approaches – watch this space for more details.A very Happy New Year to all my readers. Here’s hoping that we’ll all have a slightly easier 2006.

My Favourite Films – An Exercise in Over-Analysis

A bit of a change from my more serious posts, but maybe a useful lesson in analysis, here’s the sorry tale of just how complicated I managed to make listing my top ten favourtite films. I hope it gives you a giggle.
