RelQuest: Fault Tree Modelling for Commercial Development

Development Case Study: Commercial Development

The Challenge

Enable simple qualitative and quantitative modelling of complex system failure probabilities with a simple toolset based on Visio.

Description

RelQuest is a tool to support Fault Tree Analysis of hardware and software system reliability. It is based on a simplified modelling approach, which allows analytical (and therefore almost instantaneous) evaluation of the model. It supports base events, AND, OR and VOTE gates.

RelQuest is implemented as a Visio™ Add-In.

I originally developed it as a personal tool to support a reliability study I was performing for an early version of the Sky digital platform. After that I was able to adapt the idea for further commercial development.

The following is an example analysis. More details are available here.

Outcomes

Viable solution which helped resolve the problem for my client at the time, and which I was then able to offer as a commercial product.

Timescale

Current Status

Would need rework to latest tool versions, but still available on request
