Thoughts on the World, and Other Writings

Dependency Models

Apologies to regular readers who wondered if I'd fallen off the planet. It's been a busy second half of 2005, and I haven't managed to do much reading or writing for a few months. However, with the builders gone and the year fading, hopefully things will get back to more nearly normal!

I'm indebted to Arnon at Cirrus Minor for drawing my attention to an interesting article entitled "Dependency Models to Manage Software Architecture" by Neeraj Sangal and Frank Waldman. This outlines how a Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) can be used to model the structure of a system, and identify architectural strengths and weaknesses. It's a good paper, but the basic concepts can be taken a lot further. Please read my paper for some thoughts on how to make the basic concept even more useful.
